“Michaela Bruckmüller’s photographic room installations focus on the relation between surface and space, and between light and dark. She uses the various qualities of the surfaces of exposed paper in order to analyze spatial perception. […] Glassy reflective surfaces, mysterious velvety surfaces, and the sharp outlines of color-intensive objects against dark backgrounds evoke an irritatingly flat and apparently endless spatiality. This effect is created by the harsh contrast between the haptic presence of the image motifs and the intangible darkness that surrounds them.” Astrid Kury
